We’re finally getting A green lantern series From Greg Berlanti At HBO Max

With HBO Max gearing up for launch, the most recent details reveal a green lantern series in the works. While the live-action film with Ryan Reynolds shown to be a meme-worthy disastrous, green lantern is still a hot commodity for DC and Warner Bros.

The news from Variety details how green lantern will be one of two shows created for the new streaming platform, HBO Max. While numerous details are still unknown, the show is from producer Greg Berlanti, the man responsible for The CW’s Arrowverse shows, Titans, and Doom Patrol. Along with Green Lantern, Berlanti will also produce Strange Adventures, an anthology series featuring characters across the DC Universe. We don’t which ones yet, but do know that the show will tell stories focused on the intersection of regular folks living in a world with these heroes.

A series inspired by the green Lantern

The character of green lantern has had a troublesome road to live-action. Being an original founding member of the Justice League, many animated DC films and shows feature the character. The animated version has even had huge stars financing their voices to the hero, many famously, Nathan Fillion

The story of green lantern sees a fighter pilot (depending on the origin), Hal Jordan, who comes across a dying Alien. The alien then leaves him with his mysterious ring, wearing which imbibes him amazing powers. The ring chooses Hal, making him part of an elite intergalactic peacekeeping Corps.

It’s uncertain what the new series will focus on; be it an origin story of the solo character of Hal Jordan himself, of the larger green lantern Corps. The Corps certainly allows a lot much more avenues of storytelling given the number of characters and epic galactic scope.

Not the first Live-Action attempt of the Character

As discussed earlier, Warner Bros. attempted to bring green lantern to live-action in his own film in 2011. but even the star power of Ryan Reynolds, his wit and charm, didn’t stop the film being a travesty.

The most significant fault was really not getting what made green lantern unique. The paint-by-numbers origin story seemingly turned off anybody in a position of power to ever want to touch the character again. Although, it didn’t stop Zack Snyder from trying.

Green lantern could have been in Justice league Movie

Many leaked reports and people who saw test screenings of Zack Snyder’s (now infamous) Snyder cut of the 2017 Justice League, claim green lantern was part of the movie. While the Corps get a passing mention in the movie, seeing where the idea of the group could have gone in the DC extended universe could have been something interesting. In the wake of the HBO Max press conference, the hashtag “#ReleaseTheSnyderCut” started trending. If that film will ever be officially released, HBO Max is where it would happen.

Green lantern series is in good Hands

Greg Berlanti has a television empire behind him with the entirety of the Arrowverse. Which includes shows like Arrow, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Supergirl and more. and beyond the green lantern series, the man also has a new spin-off in the form of a Superman show.

So the green lantern series being in the hands of a man who has proven time and time again that he cares about the source material is a good sign. It’s a sign that the character will have the maker’s respect and will come across in a way that doesn’t take away from the larger universe. There is currently no word on whether the new green lantern series will be part of the Arrowverse, especially because David Ramsey’s John Diggle has been teased as a green lantern on other Earths throughout the series. Yet, the rights situations between HBO Max and the CW can be tricky, so it may not be possible for the shows to be connected. Yet, Ramsey is totally free since Arrow is in its final season.

The green lantern series will be exclusively for the streaming service, HBO Max.
